Brandman Research conducted a survey to evaluate the characteristics of insomnia in children with ASD and the distress it causes the children and their families.

Out of the 384 Israeli families of children with ASD that participated in the survey, 63% of the children suffer from insomnia, 80% of them on a regularly basis. 40% of the families reported a strong connection between insomnia and extremization of the child behavior.

The insomnia affects the entire family- 85% of the parents reported that at least one family member is affected from the child’s insomnia, and in more than half the cases, there was an impact on the siblings’ daily routing, mental state, fatigue, or school performance.
About a quarter of the parents said that their child’s insomnia greatly impairs their employment.

One of the parents shared: we experience months and months without sleep, because my son suffers from severe insomnia. Almost every night he falls asleep between 2 to 4 AM. He continues sleeping at school and we are completely devastated during the day and at work. We started to suffer from health problems, and I’m sure it’s due to lack of sleep. Even when my son has one good night’s sleep because he is exhausted, I’m unable to sleep myself as I got used to sleepless nights.
